Nancy Scott
Nancy can’t remember a time when she didn’t dance, starting when she was only three years old. Her mother was a tap dancer who instilled a love of dance into Nancy almost before she could walk. She always took dances lessons including ballet from both French and Russian teachers.
As a child Nancy made up dances and held shows at her house. She was later a song leader in high school and made up most of the routines. Nancy also taught dance for the Santa Barbara Department of Recreation while attending college in Santa Barbara and, after having children, taught dance in return for their classes.
Nancy stays up-to-date with changes in dance and techniques by attending conventions and continuing to take classes from master teachers in Los Angeles. Her favorite part of the job is and always has been the wonderful people she comes into contact with every day. She especially loves the hugs she received daily from the young dancers, many of whom have found a passion for dance in Nancy’s classes that is with them for the rest of their life.
History
Dancin’ In Acton came into being in 1983 when Nancy Scott realized that there were many children and adults in Acton interested in dance but no studio to meet the need of the community.
Not being one to let grass grow under her feet, Nancy opened Dancin’ In Acton in March of 1983 with four classes at the Acton Community Center. Nancy laughed as she recalled, “We held out first recital with only two by fours as walls, folding chairs and a line drawn to signify the end of the stage.”
Five years later Dancin’ In Acton was offering enough classes to warrant it own building, which Nancy found on Sierra Hwy. The studio quickly outgrew their first premises with only one dance room and moved to the present location on Santiago Road in 1992.
In the beginning, Nancy taught all the classes but soon started hiring other teachers. One of the first teachers she hired was her daughter Cindy who, though she was only 14 at the time, was more than capable. Cindy has continued to teach at the studio as well as Nancy’s other daughter Theresa. Both of Nancy’s daughters now have their own children in dance classes.
Dancin’ In Acton is well known for producing amazing dancers as well as the number of awards they win. The professional dance team attends many dance competitions; LA Dancemagic, Starpower, Show Biz, Showstoppers, and Tremaine’s where Dancin’ In Acton has twice won Best of Show.
